Short guide to vape equipment and terminology

By now, I’m sure you’ve heard of a vape pen or vape mod. They’ve been on the market for long enough that we all know someone who uses one. Many use them to quit smoking. It’s a way to deliver nicotine without the many harmful chemicals found in traditional tobacco products, and they are generally thought to be a safer option than traditional combusted tobacco products. Many people use it for CBD or THC. Again, delivering specific chemical compounds found in marijuana without inhaling smoke. Some just enjoy the draw and the many different flavors. Whatever you might use your vape for, the basics are pretty simple, and common among uses.

At the most basic level, vape devices combine a battery with a heating element and tank. When activated, the heating element heats e-liquids or oils, delivering vapor to the user. That said, there is an endless supply of modifications you can make to give you the perfect puff.

 Vape Device

This is the main part of your vape pen. It houses the battery, and sometimes the heating coil. Some use integrated internal batteries, and others come with replaceable and interchangeable batteries. As you become more familiar with vaping, the battery can be a place where you can control the strength and draw of your vape. If you are a beginner, you may want to start off with low output devices with internal integrated batteries, and you can make adjustments as you learn more about what you like.

Vape devices come in both automatic and manual styles. The automatic batteries turn on when you inhale, while the manual push-button styles require you to push buttons to turn them on. Nearly all manual devices follow the same operating procedures:

  •     Turn on - 5 clicks
  •     Heat adjustment – 3 clicks
  •     Inhale – Press and hold
  •     Turn off – 5 clicks

There is a large range of options in this department, depending on what kind of control you are looking for. Some vapers like to go with basic stick batteries, with integrated internal batteries, for their simplicity and price. You press the button or inhale. Easy as that. Some people like the control they get with larger box Mods or Advanced Personal Vaporizers with settings and a display. These options also typically allow you to choose the specific battery that supplies the power that you want. They may also have different options like temperature control, wattage or amperage. Another advantage to this type is that it may allow you to customize your coil, giving you greater control over how power is utilized and distributed. It really depends on which features are important to you.

 Vape Cartridge

There are three main types of cartridges or tanks on the market today, including atomizers, cartomizers and clearomizers. These are all different types of tanks and coils that screw onto your battery, hold the e-liquid, and turn them into vapor. There are pros and cons to each type, and again, your choice depends greatly on personal preference. Some are better for heavy vaping, and some may retain flavor from the previous e-juice. There is a learning curve, but people at your local vape shop should be able to help you.

Maintenance of your tanks and coils will go a long way to ensure the long-term performance of your vape pen. You should clean your tank when it gets dirty. All you need to do is detach your tank and clean all components thoroughly with a little soap and water. Dry each piece with a paper towel, and allow to air dry for another 15 minutes. That’s it! When everything is dry, reassemble the tank and refill. In the case of a particularly dirty tank, you can wipe it with a paper towel that has been soaked with high proof vodka first. The alcohol will help break down deposits, and you can clean it more easily.

The E-liquid

This is what we are all after, at the end of the day. The device and all its components are merely vehicles for the flavor, so this is where you can really make vaping enjoyable. E-liquid comes in a variety of different flavors and may include nicotine. As marijuana and its derivatives have become legal over the past few years, CBD and THC options have also entered the market.

If you are mainly looking for flavor, you may choose a variety without nicotine. If you are craving the nicotine buzz or are trying to quit smoking, you may want to go with a variety that contains nicotine. They are available in enough flavors that you are bound to find one that suits you.

As with any new endeavor, take your time and learn the basics. Know what you want from it, and make it happen. Find a reputable supplier, and they can help you find exactly what you’re looking for!
